Former Lazio and Torino goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani feels that the Biancocelesti put in a fairly good defensive performance against Inter despite their loss in Serie A yesterday, but that their big flaw was dropping too deep.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInter1908, the former keeper also suggested that having multiple objectives to fight for has helped rather than hurt the Nerazzurri.
Inter were heading into the final fifteen minutes or so of yesterday evening’s match feeling like perhaps they were headed for a twelfth league defeat of the season.
This was hardly the lack of a result of pressure, possession, or attempts by the Nerazzurri.
Rather, the Biancocelesti had put in a diligent defensive display to ensure that however much Inter pushed, a way through proved elusive to find.
However, Lazio’s resistance was eventually broken in the 78th minute, with Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku combining to open the scoring.
Then, once that happened, it only seemed to put more wind in the Nerazzurri’s sails, and once this dynamic happened Lazio had little answer to stop the Nerazzurri.
The stubborn display at the back from the first half and much of the second proved to be all for nothing as the Biancocelesti then succumbed to a winning goal from Robin Gosens and a further Martinez strike late on.
However, from Marchegiani’s perspective, “Lazio didn’t play badly, it was a defensive match from them but they were very focused, they were ahead in the 78th minute.”
“The problem is that they began to drop too deep into midfield, and they were unable to win the ball back and counter quickly,” the former keeper added.
“That’s where Inter’s physical superiority began to overwhelm them.”
Marchegiani also weighed in on what fighting on three fronts means for Inter, arguing that “Having two or three different objectives to fight for gives you hope, you don’t face matches as a last resort and so you get a bit of a boost.”
