Ac Milan striker Olivier Giroud says he’s not out for revenge against Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez following his nation’s defeat in the World Cup final.
The two forwards took part in the grand finale in Qatar 2022, and it was Argentina who emerged victorious at the end of a dramatic affair that was eventually settled by penalty shootouts after a 3-3 draw.
On Wednesday, the two men will cross paths yet again when Milan “host” Inter at the San Siro Stadium for the first leg of the Champions League semifinal.
During Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, Giroud was asked if he’ll be seeking vengeance against Lautaro Martinez for the defeat in Doha.
Nonetheless, the experienced Frenchman dismissed the prospect, preferring to focus on his club’s objectives, even if he admits that this could be an extra motive.
“Revenge for the World Cup? There’s also the Super Cup,” says the experienced striker laughing as reported by FcInterNews.
“It’s not a personal thing, it’s not Giroud against Lautaro. Let’s leave the past behind. Obviously for me it’s an extra motivation. Nothing limits my concentration, I’m only focused on the pitch.”
The 36-year-old has been a key player for Stefano Pioli’s team throughout the Champions League campaign, scoring five goals and providing two assists while starting all 10 matches.
For his part, Lautaro will be looking to pave Inter’s way towards victory. He has two goals and three assists in his 10 European outings this season.
