Inter coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his side were more than good value for their 2-0 win against AC Milan in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia after the match, via FCInterNews, the 47-year-old emphasized the Nerazzurri’s superiority in chances created.
Inter take a very useful lead into the second leg of the Milan derby Champions League semifinal tie next week, but not an unassailable one.
After the Nerazzurri scored twice in barely ten minutes played, neither of the two city rivals got on the scoresheet in yesterday’s first leg.
This was not for any lack of any attacking intent from Inzaghi’s Inter, however, particularly in the first half.
As the former Lazio coach was keen to point out, the chances were there for Inter to extend their lead.
And, in contrast, the coach was equally quick to observe that their defensive display had really restricted Milan, as he felt the Rossoneri only had one really telling opportunity to find the back of the net.
Simone Inzaghi Happy With Chances Inter Milan Created
“In the first half, we should’ve had a greater advantage,” the Inter coach said, “we hit the post, had a penalty ruled out, there was a clearance onto the woodwork.”
“We could have scored more, but we’ll take the 2-0 advantage, knowing that we’re still ninety minutes plus stoppage time away from making an incredible dream come true.”
“It’s a great feeling,” Inzaghi said, “we’ve done some great things in the past twenty months.”
“We’ve lifted trophies, but what’s already been done doesn’t matter, it’s the future that counts,” the Nerazzurri coach said.
Inzaghi looked to the Nerazzurri’s upcoming fixtures, noting that “We have Sassuolo up next, then Milan, we play in the Coppa Italia final, and we want to reach the final of the Champions League too.”
“We know we’ve not gotten everything we want, but massive credit to the guys as they’ve kept the quality up even though they’ve been playing every 48-72 hours since April 1.”
Even though some reports have claimed that Inter CEO Beppe Marotta is keen to move on from Simone Inzaghi at the end of the season, the 47-year-old continues to have the team sparkling in Europe’s biggest competition.
“They guys did great,” he said of his side’s display in the Champions League derby, “they played a perfect first half.”
“Then in the second half we managed the match well, we barely risked conceding except for Tonali hitting the post.”
Inzaghi called it “A great win, although we still need to take the last step.”
