Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni is ready to sign a contract extension by the end of May.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInter1908. Inter are pushing to tie Bastoni’s future down with a new contract.

The 24-year-old former Atalanta and Parma man’s current deal runs out at the end of June 2024.

However, the Nerazzurri would have no intention of getting anywhere near that point without an extension.

Inter Want To Avoid Losing Key Man On Free Transfer

Therefore, Inter’s priority is undoubtedly to avoid any risk of losing Bastoni on a free transfer.

The Nerazzurri have learned from bitter experience what can happen if they don’t lock a player down on a new deal and let him go into the final year of his contract via their handling of the Milan Skriniar situation.

The Slovakian rejected a contract extension offer and will join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

It has even been reported that, if Bastoni doesn’t pen a new deal, he could be sold in the summer. The Italy international is also a target for Manchester City, PSG, and Juventus.

Champions League Key To Alessandro Bastoni Extending Inter Contract

According to the Gazzetta, the Nerazzurri’s progress in this season’s Champions League will be a key factor in contract negotiations with Bastoni.

Inter could earn well over €100 million if they reach the final of the competition. Accordingly, there is financial wiggle room for Inter. The club want to take advantage of this by not wasting any time in contract talks with Bastoni.

However, keeping hold of the 24-year-old is an absolute priority for Inter. Securing an agreement on a new deal will undoubtedly be one of the first things that Inter do with their newfound financial freedom.

The Nerazzurri don’t want to arrive at the start of the summer transfer window with Bastoni’s situation uncertain. According to the Gazzetta, the defender is getting close to signing a new deal by the end of the current month.
