Inter Milan will extend the contract of striker Edin Dzeko, but only if they qualify for next season’s Champions League.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Dzeko’s current contract with Inter runs out at the end of next month.

The former Manchester City and Wolfsburg man joined from Roma on a two-year deal during the summer of 2021.

Dzeko has had an impact since joining the Nerazzurri. The 37-year-old Bosnian international proved decisive with his goal and first half performance against AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Accordingly, the Nerazzurri still want to keep hold of Dzeko for at least one more season.

It has been reported that Dzeko is ready to sign a one-season extension worth €5 million net in wages. The Bosnian would reject Major League Soccer interest to do so.

Inter Serie A Finish Decisive For Edin Dzeko Contract Extension

According to the Gazzetta, much will turn on whether Inter qualify for next season’s Champions League.

This time around, the Nerazzurri are flying in Europe’s top club competition. Ninety minutes against AC Milan separate Inter from an appearance in the final.

The earnings from the knockout rounds have been a huge financial boost for Inter. The Nerazzurri’s total Champions League earnings could soar beyond €100 million if they reach the final.

This extra financial wiggle room makes it far more straightforward for Inter to agree a new deal with a player like Dzeko.

However, the financial boost from playing in this season’s Champions League will be negated if Inter fail to reach next season’s edition of the competition.

According to the Gazzetta, if Inter don’t finish in the top four in Serie A, they won’t extend Dzeko’s contract.

However, with a top four finish secured, all systems are go for the Bosnian to sign a new deal.
