Inter Milan will smash the record for gate receipt earnings in Italian football with their clash against AC Milan tomorrow.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Champions League semifinal second leg will easily surpass the record that had already been broken less than a week ago in the first leg.
The newspaper anticipate that Inter will earn roughly €12 million from tomorrow’s match, likely more than that.
There is little surprise that the Champions League semifinal tie between Inter and Milan would be a cash cow for both clubs.
The hype prior to Wednesday’s first leg reached a fever pitch. The Milan derby is always one of Italian football’s showpiece occasions, and the stakes could hardly be higher.
The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri had last met at this stage of Europe’s competition in 2003. Now, two decades later, there has been enormous demand to see the rematch.
Inter Milan To Blow Away 6-Day-Old Gate Receipt Record
In last week’s first leg match at the San Siro, Milan were nominally the home team. This meant that the Rossoneri collected the gate receipt earnings.
For that match, Milan took in €10,461,705 from gate receipts.
This was a near record for Italian football. Interestingly enough, Milan had also set the record that they themselves broke last week. The Rossoneri had earned around €9 million from a round of sixteen first leg against Tottenham Hotspur in February.
However, Milan’s record won’t stand for long.
Whilst it is not yet clear how much Inter will earn from tomorrow’s decisive second leg, as the total amount will have to be counted after the match, they will break their city rivals’ record for gate receipt earnings.
According to the Corriere, Inter will bring in no less than €12 million from tomorrow’s match.
