Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi feels that reaching the Champions League final would be the culmination of a months-long dream.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset ahead of this evening’s semifinal second leg match against AC Milan, via FCInterNews, the 47-year-old opened up on what is at stake for the Nerazzurri.
Inter have a chance to book their place in European club football’s biggest match.
The Nerazzurri had to come a long way to get to this point. Even when the group stage draw was made, the Nerazzurri seemed to be handed a major setback in the form of a “group of death” containing Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
However, Inter negotiated that treacherous group. A win and a draw against the Blaugranas were enough to give Inter a place in the knockout rounds for the second season running.
Then, where last season they were knocked out by Liverpool, Inter made it past Porto this time around.
An aggregate win against Benfica followed in the quarterfinals. This set up a much-hyped Milan derby clash in the semifinals.
In the first leg of the tie last week, Inter won 2-0. Now, the Nerazzurri find themselves ninety minutes plus stoppage time away from the final in Istanbul.
Inter Milan Dreamed Of This For Months, Simone Inzaghi Says
“Clearly this will be a very important match,” Inzaghi said of this evening’s derby clash. “It’s the second half of a very important tie for the history of this club.”
“We have a deserved advantage, but we’ll have to play a very similar match to Wednesday’s.”
“The stakes are high,” the coach stressed, “we’ve been working from August to today to realize this dream. Nut there’s still a long way to go, and [this evening] we’ll need to play a great match.”
As for the starting lineup tomorrow, Inzaghi said that “I have a basic idea, but I’ll have to evaluate how the player s are doing after Sassuolo.”
