Inter Milan and AC Milan want any referendum on the future of the San Siro to be held this summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who report that the two clubs feel that if any referendum is going to be held on whether or not to demolish the stadium, it shouldn’t be any later than this summer.

The new stadium saga in Milan continues to drag on. The clubs have made clear that they feel that a new stadium is the only way to move forward.

The existing San Siro isn’t considered to be sufficient as the two clubs aim to modernize infrastructure and increase revenues.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have looked to build a new stadium for the past few years. Initially, the clubs’ plans have been to build a new structure in place of the San Siro.

However, securing approval has been an uphill battle for the clubs. There is opposition to demolishing the San Siro to make way for a new stadium. Moreover, the bureaucratic hurdles have left the clubs without a clear path forward.

This has led Milan in particular to lose patience. The Rossoneri have been reported to be ready to give up and move the plans elsewhere.

This is reportedly the reason for tension between Inter President Steven Zhang and his Milan counterpart Gerry Cardinale.

Inter Milan & AC Milan Pushing For Certainty On San Siro Situation

A further delay could come in the form of a referendum on the future of the stadium. Opponents of demolishing the San Siro want a public referendum held on the question.

If a referendum were to be successful, there’s no way the clubs could move ahead. Moreover, as long as there is uncertainty, Inter and Milan cannot move forward.

Accordingly, the clubs’ stance is that if a referendum is to come, it must come soon. No later than this summer.
