Inter are fighting to maintain a record unique to the city of Milan when they face Man City in the Champions League final in Istanbul next month.
Today’s print edition of Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, note that Manchester could join Milan as a city with two clubs to have won Europe’s biggest prize if City prevail on July 10.
Milan currently has a unique place in the history of the European Cup and the Champions League.
Both major teams from the city have won the competition, on multiple occasions.
Inter have won it on three occasions, in 1964, 1965, and 2010. Meanwhile, their city rivals the Rossoneri have done so seven times, in 1963, 1969, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, and 2007.
If Inter were to win against City in Istanbul, they would go some way towards catching up to their city rivals.
Not only that, however. The Nerazzurri would also write another important chapter in the history of Milanese football. An Inter triumph would further cement the legacy of the city of Milan within European football.
Inter Milan Loss To Man City Would Signal End Of Unique European Record
If Inter were to lose, on the other hand, Milan’s unique record would fall.
At the moment, no other team has more than two European Cup or Champions League winners. London, Madrid, Lisbon, Turin, and Amsterdam can all boast one. But no other city has two as Milan does.
However, Manchester City are looking to change that.
The Cityzens’ city rivals Manchester United have won the competition on three occasions, in 1968, 1999, and 2008.
City have come close in recent years. Pep Guardiola’s men lost out to Chelsea in the 2021 final.
However, the Cityzens now have another massive shot at glory. If Inter can stop them, they can keep Milan’s special record.
On the other hand, if City topple the Nerazzurri, they will achieve a big step for the entire city of Manchester.
