Nerazzurri captain Samir Handanovic is set to start for Inter Milan against Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia next week.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Despite remaining Inter captain, Handanovic has not been the first-choice in goal for the bulk of this season.

The 38-year-old had initially held onto his spot despite the arrival of his long-term successor Andre Onana. However, in the fall the Cameroonian’s convincing performances in goal relegated Handanovic to a backup role.

This has not meant that the Slovenian has been without his chances, however.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has handed his captain a number of Serie A starts in recent weeks. The ex-Udinese man has worn the armband in league matches against Spezia and Empoli among others.

Moreover, Handanovic had been given the start against Juventus in the Coppa Italia.

The 38-year-old was Inter’s starting keeper in the first leg of the semifinal tie against the Bianconeri. However, the captain was sent off for his role in the very late brawl that erupted. Both Handanovic and Bianconeri winger Juan Cuadrado saw red for an altercation they had.

This meant that Handanovic was unavailable to play in the second leg, which Onana started.

According to the Gazzetta, however, the Nerazzurri captain will return for the final.

The Gazzetta report that Inzaghi will give his captain the nod for the final.

Handanovic is have his last opportunity to win silverware as a starter at Inter. This will partly be a show of respect for the years of service that the Slovenian has given Inter.

Moreover, the Gazzetta report, Inzaghi wants to reward Handanovic for the role that he’s played in helping Onana to settle in.

Handanovic looks to be likely to leave Inter at the end of the season.
