Former Nerazzurri and PSG striker Mauro Icardi has wished Inter Milan good luck in the Champions League final against Man City next month in Istanbul.

Posting on his Instagram story, via FCInter1908, the Argentine looked back at the moment the Nerazzurri got back into Europe’s top club competition, and wished them the best now that they’re in the final.

Five years ago, Inter booked their place in the Champions League group stage after several years away from Europe’s top club competition.

The Nerazzurri had gone several years without participation in the competition. However, the team coached by Luciano Spalletti earned a spot at the top table with a fourth place finish.

That came on the last day of the season. Inter finished in fourth ahead of Lazio, their opponents on the final day of the season.

It was a 3-2 win over the Biancocelesti that delivered the Champions League back to Inter.

Mauro Icardi Wishes Inter The Best Vs Man City

One player who played a key role in Inter getting back to the Champions League was Icardi.

The Argentine striker would leave the Nerazzurri two years later, joining Paris Saint-Germain.

However, there can be no denying that Icardi’s goals were a vital part of Inter getting back to the top level.

The Argentine had even been Nerazzurri captain for a period, although he was stripped of the armband in his final season. Icardi’s time at Inter was always accompanied by a certain degree of controversy

In any event, Icardi still looks back on what he and his teammates achieved in 2018.

Inter would not be set to face Manchester City in Istanbul next month if they hadn’t taken that first step back into the top level in 2018.

Icardi posted, “Five years ago we could say that we have reached the top of Europe again, returning after so many difficult years to play in the Champions League.”

“Today, five years later, Inter are in the FINAL! Good luck, I always wish you the best with all my heart.”
