Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez could force his way into Ballon D’Or contention with a win over Man City.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who argue that the Argentine’s blazing form in recent months means that a decisive performance in the Champions League final against City could push him into the picture for the world’s best player.

Martinez gave the first indication that perhaps he could be in the running for the Ballon D’Or last Wednesday.

Before then, the Argentine had certainly marked himself as a key man for Inter. Moreover, Martinez has been regarded as the best striker in Serie A behind perhaps only Napoli’s Victor Osimhen for a couple of seasons.

However, the 25-year-old managed to do it on a bigger stage than ever with his match-winning brace against Fiorentina.

The Inter striker proved that he can use his considerable talents to help his team to trophies. This is certainly a necessity to win the Ballon D’Or in the modern era.

Lautaro Martinez Could Reach Next Level With Decisive Display Vs Man City

Winning the Coppa Italia is hardly enough on its own to be in contention to win the Ballon D’Or, however.

Winning the Champions League, though, could be a different story.

Last season, Karim Benzema won the award. The Frenchman’s heroics in Europe’s top club competition were a big part of the reason why.

This time around, Martinez has already scored and played a key role in knockout wins over Benfica and AC Milan.

If the Argentine can have a similarly decisive impact against a City team who many view as the best in the world, can suggestions of the Ballon D’Or be far away?

So far in the past few months, Martinez has put in numerous excellent performances for Inter.

If he can turn that into winning the biggest trophy for his team on the biggest stage, he could reach something more.
