Edin Dzeko is still the favourite ahead of Romelu Lukaku to start in the Champions League final against Man City.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the 37-year-old remains ahead in the running to start in Istanbul on Saturday despite Lukaku getting back to his best form.

Over the last month and change, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has rotated the team significantly from match to match.

This has meant that over the weekend, it has been Lukaku and Joaquin Correa who have led the line. Then, during the week, Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez have played from the start.

As a consequence, whilst Lukaku has tended to play in the league, Dzeko has been the starter in cup competitions.

The Bosnian former Roma and Manchester City man continued this by starting in the Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina.

However, for the Champions League final in Istanbul, Lukaku will certainly want to start. The 30-year-old could be thinking that he has a chance of overtaking Dzeko to be in the starting lineup.

Dzeko Still Favourite Over Lukaku To Start Man City Showdown

Lukaku has been in his best form of the entire season over the past few weeks.

The Belgian has had a difficulty campaign, particularly due to disruptions from injury.

However, Lukaku has been in devastating form in Serie A since finally returning not just to fitness but real match-sharpness.

The Gazzetta note that Lukaku’s growing physical condition and outstanding run of performances certainly make him a real candidate to start against Man City on Saturday evening in Istanbul.

However, the newspaper reports, former City striker Dzeko remains the favourite to start against his old team.

Coach Inzaghi has been trusting the Bosnian as a key element of his attacking tactics all through the knockouts. According to the Gazzetta, he is still leaning towards doing the same against City.
