Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has decided to reject an Inter Milan move in favour of Atletico Madrid for family reasons.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who reveal the reasons behind the 33-year-old’s decision to join the Colchoneros at the last minute after it had appeared he was Nerazzurri-bound.

Inter had looked to be right on the edge of signing Azpilicueta from Chelsea.

The Spaniard was preparing to agree a termination of his contract with the Blues by mutual consent. Then, he would join the Nerazzurri on a free transfer, with a two-year deal on the docket.

However, evidently Atletico Madrid felt that they could come in at the last minute and cheange the player’s mind.

That is exactly what the club from the Spanish capital did. Azpilicueta has now given Atletico his agreement, and should become a Colchoneros player soon.

Cesar Azpilicueta Turns Down Inter For Atletico Madrid Due To Family Reasons

The Gazzetta makes clear that Azpilicueta decided to reject Inter due to personal reasons, rather than anything on the pitch.

Initially, the former Marseille and Osasun man was convinced to join the Nerazzurri.

However, doing so would have entailed a move to a new city for Azpilicueta and his family. After eleven years living in London, the Spaniard would have had to adjust to life in Milano.

On the other hand, when Atletico presented their offer, they gave the 33-year-old the option of returning to his native Spain.

This has evidently proved decisive in swaying Azpilicueta.

The Spaniard will have the opportunity to play Champions League football next season. And he will be able to do so whilst moving his family to the more familiar setting of Madrid.

As such, Inter will not get their man and will have to look elsewhere.
