Inter Milan have officially announced they have exercised the option to buy Francesco Acerbi.

The vastly experienced defender joined the Nerazzurri last summer on loan from Lazio. Inter had the option to maintain the player on a permanent basis and they decided to exert it.

The club made the announcement in a brief statement published on the club’s official website.

“FC Internazionale Milano can announce it has exercised the option to turn Francesco Acerbi’s loan deal into a permanent one from Lazio,” reads the official statement.

The 35-year-old earned his permanent switch on the back of a solid first campaign at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.

The Italian proved to be a reliable presence at the back. He usurped his former Lazio teammate Stefan de Vrij to become the first choice at the heart of Simone Inzaghi’s three-man defense.

Despite his relatively advanced age, he remains a competent centre-back. He’s also a mainstay within the Italian national team.

Last season, he made 49 appearances for the Nerazzurri across all competitions, contributing with a single goal and an assist. He only picked up five bookings.

Acerbi started his career at Pavia before enjoying his breakthrough at Chievo Verona in the 2011/12 campaign.

Although his time at AC Milan was unsuccessful, he managed to defy all odds and return even stronger following a serious illness, reviving his career with an impressive stint at Sassuolo.

The defender joined Lazio in 2018, enjoying four solid campaigns in the capital before signing for Inter in 2022.
