Out-of-contract Inter Milan captain Samir Handanovic has been offered to Lazio on a free transfer for next season.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the representatives of the 38-year-old international have proposed a transfer to the Biancocelesti, who he could join as the backup option to Ivan Provedel.

Handanovic has left Inter. The former captain’s contract with the Nerazzurri ran out at the end of next month, and he leaves on a free transfer.

Across his eleven seasons in an Inter shirt, Handanovic made a total of 455 appearances for the club.

In February of 2019, Handanovic became Inter’s club captain. The veteran goalkeeper took the armband from striker Mauro Icardi.

Handanovic has been Inter’s club captain ever since then, and departs having held the role until the end of his time at the club.

In his goodbye message to the club, Handanovic hinted that he wants more playing time.

The Slovenian referred to a certain bitter taste at leaving, as he quite evidently is not satisfied with a merely symbolic or purely backup role.

Moreover, Handanovic’s message indicates that he still intends to play a little while longer.

Departed Inter Milan Captain Samir Handanovic Offered To Lazio

Therefore, Handanovic is ready to look for a new team for next season.

The Slovenian can join any club he reaches an agreement, and Inter won’t be involved.

According to the Corriere, Lazio are a team who Handanovic’s agents are now in dialogue with. They have suggested the veteran keeper as a possible option to back up Number One Provedel next season.

Ex-Spezia keeper Provedel had an outstanding campaign last time around. He was even named as the best keeper in Serie A.

On the other hand, 24-year-old Portuguese international Luis Maximiano had a real damp squib of a campaign after joining from Granada.

Maximiano arrived with big expectations, but played just one Serie A match. He’s not in Maurizio Sarri’s plans and the Biancocelesti are ready to cash in.

Therefore, Handanovic could move to replace Maximiano.
