Matteo Darmian feels that Inter Milan have to strive for the top no matter what.

Speaking to InterTV, via FCInter1908, the 33-year-old gave his thoughts ahead of the upcoming season.

Last season was something of a mixed bag for Inter.

On the one hand, the Nerazzurri’s Serie A campaign did not meet expectations. Whilst a third place finish spared Inter’s blushes somewhat after even top four had looked at risk, the fact that they fell so far behind Napoli in the title race remained a massive disappointment.

However, in cup competitions it was a very different story.

Inter won both the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia for the second season in a row.

And then in Europe, the Nerazzurri got to within the very edge of glory, only missing out on lifting the Champions League trophy after a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the final.

For the new season, the expectations will be simple. In the league, Inter must improve. Meanwhile, in the cup competitions, the Nerazzurri will hope to keep the momentum going at the same level.

Matteo Darmian Expects Inter Milan To Aim For The Top

Of the return to preseason training, versatile defender Darmian said that “It’s great to be back in training. Our work is coming along well, and we’re ready to start the new season in the best way possible.”

“Our goals remain the same as ever,” the 33-year-old added. “We always aim for the very top because when you play for a top club like Inter that has to be the expectation, and we work towards it.”

“What matters is succeeding with Inter,” Darmian continued.

“I’m always trying to improve on the pitch. And being back with the national team last season is another bonus.”

As for his transition to the centre-back position, Darmian said that “I worked hard on it. And I had a great understanding with my teammates that helped me in making the transition.”
