Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries feels that there’s great hunger within the Nerazzurri squad to get back to winning the Serie A title.
Speaking to InterTV, via FCInterNews, the Dutchman gave his thoughts ahead of the upcoming season.
Dumfries has had plenty to celebrate during his two seasons as an Inter player so far.
The 27-year-old has lifted both the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana in both campaigns. Moreover, he helped the team reach the Champions League final last season, which he started.
Even with the heartbreak of a loss to Man City, it certainly made for a memorable climax to the season.
One aspect in which the Nerazzurri have not lived up to expectations in the last couple seasons has been in the league.
In the 2021-22 season, Dumfries’s first after arriving at Inter from PSV, Inter failed to defend their Scudetto crown from the previous season. Moreover, they blew what looked to be a commanding lead from the winter to wind up losing the title to city rivals AC Milan on the final day.
Then, last campaign, Inter were truthfully never within touching distance of title-winners Napoli.
Therefore, the sense is that doing better in the league is an absolute priority for Inter next season.
Whilst the cup competitions will not be brushed side, the team will certainly see winning Serie A as their real goal.
Denzel Dumfries Wants Inter Milan To Compete For Serie A Title Next Season
Dumfries said that “I’m really pumped up to start my third season with Inter.”
“We have clear objectives, such as winning the Serie A title, which I was unable to win in my first two seasons here.”
“IWhen I arrived here it was my first time playing outside the Netherlands,” Dumfries noted. “Over the past two years I’ve learned a lot from a tactical point of view thanks to the coaching staff and to my teammates, who’ve given me a lot of help to improve.”
“Now I keep learning every day and I’m happy,” the 27-year-old added.
“Last season we did very well in the Champions League, even if we didn’t win the trophy in the end,” Dumfries noted.
“Now this season we want to get back to winning the league title.”
The wingback observed that “There are several new signings who will add quality to the team. Our preparations are going very well, everyone is motivated and hungry.”
Dumfries added that “I expect a lot from this season.”
“The two friendlies in Japan will be essential to get a sense of our fitness, and of the kind of football we want to play,” he noted. “And also the new signings will be able to better understand our style of play.”
