Inter Milan could get a big boost in their pursuit of Yann Sommer in the form of a fitness update for Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer.

This according to German news outlet Bendzeitung-Meunechen, via FCInterNews, who report that Neuer is likely to return to the pitch by the start of September.

Inter have been chasing Bayern keeper Sommer for some weeks now.

The Swiss international is the Nerazzurri’s top target to replace Andre Onana.

However, as of yet, they have not been able to actually wrap up the deal.

The reason has been that Bayern have been reluctant to sell Sommer before signing a replacement.

The fact that the Bavarians have also been without captain Neuer, who has continued to recover from an injury, has made the situation an awkward for them.

At this point, if Bayern were to sell Sommer, they would have no starting-quality keeper. Therefore, they have aimed to sign a new backup to Neuer before allowing the 34-year-old to leave.

Neure Fitness Update Could Be A Boost For Inter In Yann Sommer Chase

For as long as Bayern have been unable to sign a replacement for Sommer, they have not opened up to selling Neuer to Inter.

Inter could theoretically trigger the €6 million release clause in the former Borussia Monchengladbach keeper’s contract.

However, the Nerazzurri have not wanted to sour their relations with Bayern. Moreover, they are hopeful of obtaining a lower fee.

Therefore, throughout the preseason period, Sommer has remained a Bayern player.

However, an optimistic update on Neuer’s fitness could change the German champions’ stance.

If the 37-year-old can return soon, they’ll be willing to consider a sale of Sommer.

According to Bendzeitung-Meunechen, the most recent updates are positive regarding when Neuer would be able to return.

The outlet reports that the Bayern captain could be back on the pitch as early as some time this month. At the latest, he’ll be back early in September.
