Inter Milan could wait until late in the summer transfer window to make a move for Atalanta defender Merih Demiral.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri may well decide to finally bring the 25-year-old within the last few days before deadline day.

This summer, it seems all but inevitable that Inter will make at least one more defensive signing.

Whilst the Nerazzurri have brought in Yann Bisseck, they have not yet properly replaced Milan Skriniar.

Therefore, another defender with a similar profile to the Slovakian should also arrive.

Inter have been linked with a large number of possible options for the role. Cesar Azpilicueta, for one, had looked very close to making the move before choosing Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu is the latest name reportedly on the Nerazzurri’s list.

One player who has never really fallen of Inter’s radar, however, is Atalanta defender Demiral.

Inter Could Move For Demiral Late In Transfer Window

The Nerazzurri had been in a similar position last summer.

Twelve months ago, Inter were trying to replace Andrea Ranocchia at the heart of their defense.

There had been a number of candidates, including Bremer who joined Juventus from Torino after Inter’s highly public pursuit faltered at the last step.

In the end, it was Francesco Acerbi who came in. The experienced Italian international had been the pick of Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi.

Acerbi’s move to Inter came after a protracted will-he-or-won’t-he transfer saga.

The Nerazzurri had looked into a number of possible other options before finally taking the plunge and signing the 35-year-old.

The fact that Acerbi was clearly out of the project at Lazio at that point certainly assisted Inter in the end.

And it was only on the very last day of the transfer window that Inter actually signed the former Sassuolo defender.

Perhaps Inter won’t leave it quite as late this time around with Demiral. However, the broader parallels are certainly there.

As with Acerbi last summer, Demiral is out of favour at his current club following conflicts with his coach.

Therefore. the Corriere report, Inter may continue to look into other options over the coming few weeks.

Then, if they still haven’t signed a defender, they could try to quickly go after Demiral in the final days of the window.
