Defender Francesco Acerbi is an injury doubt for Inter Milan’s Serie A opener against Monza, with Stefan de Vrij set to start.

This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that Acerbi’s calf injury could cause him to miss the start of the season.

Inter confirmed earlier today that Acerbi suffered a calf problem in training.

The 35-year-old Italian international picked up a strain to the soleus muscle in his left leg.

It is not clear how long the problem will sideline Acerbi for. Further medical tests in the coming days should more clearly reveal the severity of the injury and a recovery timeline.

However, the Gazzetta report, there is already at least some idea of how long the defender will be out.

The newspaper anticipates that Acerbi will not likely be fit to start against Monza in the Nerazzurri’s first Serie A match of the upcoming season. That match will take place in less than two weeks’ time.

Acerbi A Doubt For Inter Vs Monza Clash – De Vrij To Start

There are now less than two weeks to go before Inter begin their Serie A season against Monza.

Whilst it is not yet clear whether or not Acerbi will be fit enough to play, there is also the question of match-fitness.

Therefore, the former Lazio defender may well be fit enough to be in the matchday squad. However, if he only returns to training some time later next week, he may well not be totally match-fit.

As such, another former Biancocelesti man is set to start in Acerbi’s place.

Stefan de Vrij will almost certainly start against the Brianzoli, reports the Gazzetta.

The 31-year-old will be in the middle of Inter’s back three.

On either side of him will be Alessandro Bastoni and Matteo Darmian. It will not, however, be an all-Italian backline as it was for the Nerazzurri in the Champions League final against Manchester City.
