Union Berlin have completed the signing of wingback Robin Gosens from Inter Milan.

The Bundesliga club confirm this in an official announcement, unveiling the 29-year-old former Atalanta man and Germany international for next season.

Gosens leaves Inter after eighteen months at the club.

The German arrived with big expectations from Atalanta in the January transfer window of the 2021-22 season.

However, in truth, Gosens never quite showed his best form in a Nerazzurri shirt.

Injuries played a major role in disrupting Gosens’s momentum at Inter. He arrived from Atalanta still recovering from a long-term muscle injury, and this seemed to haunt him to some degree throughout his time at the club.

Moreover, Gosens was never able to nail down a first-choice starting role at the Nerazzurri.

In the German’s first season, he found himself behind Ivan Perisic in the pecking order.

Then, last campaign, it was Federico Dimarco who inherited Perisic’s mantle on Inter’s left flank rather than Gosens.

Gosens’s time at Inter was not without highlights, however.

The German scored a vital late goal for Inter in a 3-3 Champions League group stage draw at the Camp Nou. That result was key to Inter reaching the knockout stages of the competition, where they eventually reached the final.

Gosens’s final appearance for the Nerazzurri was in the Champions League final against Manchester City.

The 29-year-old came off the bench during the second half of the match.

In total, Gosens made 58 appearances for Inter across all competitions. He scored five goals in the process.

Reports widely suggest that the German’s priority for next season is playing time.

Union look to be able to offer that more than Inter. The club from the German capital are strengthening for their first ever season in the Champions League.

Meanwhile Carlos Augusto as arrived at Inter from Monza as Gosens’s like-for-like replacement.
