Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez is now just two goals away from entering the list of top ten goalscorers in Inter Milan history.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who note that the 26-year-old has come close to writing his chapter in the history books with his opening day brace against Monza last weekend.

Martinez came into this season just three goals away from joining the ranks of Inter’s top ten goalscorers of all time.

And the Argentine didn’t take very long to get off the mark in his quest to do so.

Martinez scored both of Inter’s goals in a 2-0 win over Monza on Saturday.

As things stand, the tenth man on Inter’s list of top ten goalscorers in all competitions is former striker Ermano Aebi.

The Italian found the back of the net 106 times in a Nerazzurri shirt.

Martinez had come into this season just four back from Aerbi’s total. And with 37 Serie A matches left to go, he has cut that deficit in half.

Lautaro Martinez On The Verge Of Entering Inter Milan Top Ten Goalscorers

It is not really a great surprise to see Martinez high on Inter’s list of all-time top goalscorers.

The Argentine joined Inter in the summer of 2018 from Racing Club. He arrived at the age of twenty.

In Martinez’s first season at the Nerazzurri, he was more of a backup option rather than a regular starter.

However, after that settling-in period, the Argentine has become one of his team’s most important players.

In two seasons under Antonio Conte, Martinez formed a prolific striker partnership with Romelu Lukaku.

Then, after Lukaku departed, the Argentine’s importance to the team only increased.

In each of the last two seasons, Martinez has finished the campaign as Inter’s top scorer.

The 26-year-old has also inherited the captain’s armband this season. That is a reflection of his importance the team in terms of his linkup play, defensive workrate, and leadership qualities rather than just his goals.

But even apart from Martinez’s other qualities, his pure goalscoring has also been an impressive attribute.

Whilst the Argentine can occasionally go through goal droughts, he has easily broken the twnety-goal barrier in two seasons running.

And the brace that Martinez scored on Saturday went some way towards suggesting that he won’t have trouble doing so for a third season in a row.
