Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer names Hakan Calhanoglu as the two teammates who impressed him the most at Appiano Gentile.

The 34-year-old signed for the Nerazzurri this summer following a short spell at Bayern Munich.

The custodian wasn’t interested in serving as a backup for Manuel Neuer. He pushed to finalize a transfer to Inter who guaranteed him a starting spot.

The Swiss has some major gloves to fill following the departures of Andre Onana and Samir Handanovic. He has already delivered solid displays in the first two rounds of the season.

Sommer spoke about his Inter Milan debut against Monza at the San Siro, describing it as a beautiful experience.

“It was really nice. Though, It wasn’t the first time for me at San Siro. I played with Gladbach in the Champions League but the were no fans due to Covid,” said the shot-stopper in an interview with DAZN via FcInterNews.

“But the fans were there against Monza. It was beautiful!

“I’m 100% happy to be here. Inter is a great club with a long tradition. For me, it’s all completely new.

“It’s a great challenge, let’s see what happens. I couldn’t wait to get here and compete in a new league, in a new country and alongside new teammates. Now I want to win with Inter.”

Sommer recalled his first conversation with Inter boss Simone Inzaghi following his arrival at the club.

“Inzaghi explained what he expects from me. He said he was happy to have me here. I too replied that I was happy to work with him.”

The experienced shostopper is unfazed by the fact that he’s the shortest goalkeeper in Serie A.

“For me, it doesn’t matter how tall a goalkeeper is, just like the outfield players. In Europe, you see many small defenders.

“If you’re not tall, you have to excel in other areas: Timing, explosiveness, strength, jumping, courage. These are fundamental aspects to make up for height. For me, it’s not an issue.

“Explosiveness and quick feet are always fundamental. It is important to take small steps with the right tempo. Height has never been a problem for me”.

“I love the fact that Inter play the ball on the ground. You also have to consider the risks and find the right balance, but I like it. It’s always important to start the action from the back.”

Sommer also revealed a funny message from his Marcus Thuram who encouraged him to rejoin him at Inter.

“Marcus and I were always in contact. I asked him about Italy and Inter. He replied on WhatsApp with two slices of pizza.

“He told me how beautiful it is and the intensity of training sessions.”

The veteran custodian also named Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas as his favorite goalkeeper.

He also revealed his objectives at the club and his most impressive teammates.

“My main goal is to win titles with the Nerazzurri.

“It’s difficult to name one teammate. But I’ve always liked Calhanoglu since he played in Germany. Obviously, Lautaro too.”
