The wide areas could be more important for Inter Milan than ever following the arrival of new signings this summer.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has always been a coach who gives the wingbacks an important role in his system.
That was the case at Lazio, where players like Manuel Lazzari and Senad Lulic were vital to how the team played in possession, giving them a wide outlet.
And even before the 47-year-old’s arrival at Inter, the Nerazzurri had been playing similarly.
Antonio Conte, Inzaghi’s predecessor at Inter, is another coach who uses wingbacks extensively.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that wingbacks have been key players for Inzaghi over the past two seasons.
But this season, they could be even more important.
Wingbacks A Vital Dimension Of How Inter Milan Play
As the Corriere note, Inter made two signings in the wide areas this summer.
On the left, Carlos Augusto effectively replaced Robin Gosens like-for-like. This means that the Nerazzurri have attempted to add a new attacking presence on the same flank as Dimarco.
Whilst Dimarco remains arguably Inter’s most important wide player now, the need for depth is obvious.
And Augusto’s arrival signals a plan to give the coach as much depth as possible to draw upon. The wide areas are often the first place Inzaghi turns to to give his team a boost with fresh legs from the bench around the hour mark of matches.
And on the right side, the summer transfer window saw an even bigger change.
Gone is the young, physically imposing and explosive but also raw Raoul Bellanova.
Replacing the Italian youth team international is ex-Juventus veteran Juan Cuadrado.
The Colombian’s arrival give Inter a totally different kind of option on the right. Cuadrado is a technically skilful player, notable for his dribbling ability and pinpoint crosses.
With both Cuadrado and Denzel Dumfries on that flank, Inzaghi can experiment and change things up.
More than ever, the coach can look to win the battle on the flanks in order to control matches.
Inzaghi indicated that this will be a key battle against Fiorentina this evening. And, the Corriere suggests, it will be key all season for Inter.
