Simone Inzaghi can boast a better overall record at Inter Milan in the past two seasons than Stefano Pioli can at AC Milan – but lacks the Serie A title victory of his derby counterpart.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, examine the two coaches’ records.
Two years ago, Inzaghi made the switch from Lazio to Inter. He replaced Antonio Conte as Nerazzurri head coach/
This coincided, roughly speaking, with the point when Pioli’s project was beginning to take flight.
This naturally pitted the two experienced Italian coaches on a collision course.
Over the past two seasons, Inter and Milan actually amassed identical points totals. Both managed 156 points between the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns.
And both the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have started this season by taking nine points from nine.
Inzaghi At Inter Has Superior Attacking Record – But Pioli & Milan Have The Title
The similarities don’t end with points totals.
Both of Inter and Milan have conceded 74 goals in the period since Inzaghi began coaching the former.
But it is in attack where there is a marked difference between Inzaghi’s Nerazzurri and Pioli’s Rossoneri. And it is a contract which heavily favours Inzaghi.
The Gazzetta note that Inter have scored 155 goals during the period, whilst Milan have managed just 133. These numbers illustrate the superior attacking force that Inzaghi has turned the Nerazzurri into.
In terms of the head-to-head record, Inter and Milan have met a whopping eight times across four different competition.
The Nerazzurri have won four of those matches. The Rossoneri won two, whilst a further two ended in draws.
And yet, despite having built the more formidable attack, and having the head-to-head over Pioli, Inzaghi is yet to get his hands on the Serie A title.
This is down to the coach’s inability to instill a real streak of consistency in the league.
In the 2021-22 season, Inter looked to be in a commanding position in the title race in January.
But one of their two losses to the Rossoneri gave Pioli’s men a way back in. And from then on, the Nerazzurri endured a bad wobble in form during the spring.
That was enough to give Pioli a chance to mastermind an imperious run down the stretch. It was he who lifted the title.
And then last campaign, both Inter and Milan suffered erratic form in the league, allowing Napoli to march to the title.
On the other hand, Inzaghi has looked the superior cup competition coach of the two.
The Nerazzurri have gone four for four in Italian domestic cup competitions. They handed Milan 3-0 thrashings in the Coppa Italia semifinal in 2021-22 and then in last season’s Supercoppa Italiana.
And Inzaghi also dumped Pioli and Milan out of the Champions League in last season’s semifinal.
