Legendary former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro feels that injuries played a big role in his disappointing spell at Inter Milan.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the 50-year-old gave his thoughts on the reasons for his time at the Nerazzurri never quite working out.

When Cannavaro joined Inter in the summer of 2002, he was one of the outstanding defenders not just in Serie A, but in all of world football.

The Italian had come through the youth ranks at Napoli. Then, he spent the better part of a decade with Parma, marshalling the Emilian team’s defense.

Cannavaro joined Inter at a point when he was, theoretically, in his prime. He was a full Italian international, and certainly looked capable of enjoying a long, trophy-laden spell with Inter.

But that’s not quite how it worked out for Cannavaro.

Fabio Cannavaro Looks Back On Disappointing Inter Milan Spell

Cannavaro spent just two seasons at Inter.

He left for Juventus in 2004, before departing from the Bianconeri in 2006 after the Calciopoli scandal.

Cannvaro then captained Italy to a World Cup triumph in 2006, before making the switch to Real Madrid.

Cannavaro’s body of work with Parma, Juventus, Real, and Italy certainly marks him out as one of the best defenders of his generation.

But with Inter, it never quite clicked.

After a decent first season with the Nerazzurri, Cannavaro’s second saw him fall out of favour.

“I had an ankle injury that season,” the legendary former defender explained.

“And I don’t think that I had the trust of the club, because of that.”

“When I left, they probably ended up regretting it,” Cannavaro added.

Cannavaro made a total of fifty appearances for Inter in Serie A across his two seasons at the club. And he made 74 in all competitions.
