Inter Milan have continued to tighten their grip on the derby rivalry against AC Milan with yesterday evening’s emphatic victory.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who suggest that “Milan is still nerazzurra” after the 5-1 rout.

At the start of 2023, Inter will not necessarily have expected to face city rivals Milan on five occasions during the calendar year.

And moreover, the prospect, will not necessarily have been an appealing one.

Inter had lost out to the Rossoneri in the title race in the previous season. And in the first derby of the 2022-23 campaign, Milan beat Inter in a 3-2 thriller.

Given the always unpredictable nature of the derby as a fixture, it’s traditionally been a difficult one for one team to really go on a dominant run in.

But in the space of less than twelve months, that is exactly what Inter have done.

Inter Milan Strengthen Grip On Derby Rivalry Vs AC Milan

Inter’s first meeting with Milan in 2023 came in the Supercoppa Italiana.

That match resulted in a 3-0 victory for the Nerazzurri. The scoreline hardly flattered Inter’s performance.

Then, Inter got revenge for their defeat in the first derby of the season by beating Milan in the reverse fixture. It was a 1-0 win, but the scoreline didn’t do justice to the degree of the Nerazzurri’s superiority.

In May, Inter and Milan found themselves back at it, this time with the stakes higher than ever.

Both the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri reached the Champions League semifinal.

Inter came right out of the gates in the first leg of the semifinal tie – winning the match 2-0 after an early burst. It looked like a sign that Inter weren’t going to let go of their newfound hold on the fixture anytime soon.

And a 1-0 victory in the second leg was a further point of emphasis.

And yet, there remained a sense that yesterday’s derby was still in the balance. Both Inter and Milan had started this season in blistering form after major upheaval in the summer transfer window.

But Inter grabbed an emphatic 5-1 win. Five goals to mark their fifth successive win over their city rivals.
