There were a few doubts about the challenge of Denzel Dumfries on Theo Hernandez in the buildup to Inter Milan’s opener against AC Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

In the end, Inter won yesterday’s first Milan derby of the season in emphatic fashion. The Nerazzurri ran away with the match by a scoreline of 5-1.

But early in the match, there was palpable tension as both teams tried to impose themselves on the match.

Inter settled their nerves with an early opener.

Midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan was the player to find the back of the net early on. His goal came from a Federico Dimarco assist, although a lot of the work in creating the goal was done by Marcus Thuram.

And it was in the action of Thuram setting up the chance that the Rossoneri felt there was a foul.

Some Doubts About Inter Milan Opener Vs AC Milan

According to the Corriere, there was no doubt regarding the challenge between Thuram and Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

The Nerazzurri striker fairly used his pace, strength, and footwork to escape his marker and arrive in the penalty area.

But there was an incident off the ball that led to some questions.

Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries did appear to shoulder-barge Milan defender Theo Hernandez.

It was away from the ball, but it was close enough to the play and made sure that the Rossoneri man could not potentially make a covering challenge on Thuram or slow the Inter striker down once he’d gotten away from Thiaw.

The Corriere suggest that, had referee Simone Sozza blown his whistle, few Inter players would have protested.

But on the other hand, once the moment had passed, it was not exactly a “clear and obvious” situation for VAR to intervene in.

Therefore, for the Corriere, it was a 50/50 moment.
