Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez gives credit to Real Sociedad who managed to put his side in great difficulty.

The two clubs locked horns at the San Sebastian Stadium on Wednesday night in the first matchday of the Champions League group stage.

The Spaniards were the better side from the get-go. Their supremacy saw them take the lead as early as the fourth minute. Brais Mendez dispossessed Alessandro Bastoni before beating Yann Sommer.

The Basque-based club then had a string of chances but failed to double their lead. In the end, the Nerazzurri launched a late onslaught and managed to snatch the equalizer through Lautaro Martinez.

After the match, the Inter captain admitted that his opponents made it difficult for him and his teammates.

“I congratulate the boys because we managed to stay in the game,” said the Argentine in his post-match interview with Mediaset via FcInterNews.

“But also have to congratulate Sociedad because they put us in great difficulty. It was important not to lose at this stadium.

“This is a competition where the details count. We have to significantly improve. I’m happy because we stayed in the game even when we were facing difficulties.

“The first half is one to forget. Now let’s recover our energy and focus on our next Serie A match.”

Martinez also acknowledged that his team may have been tired following last weekend’s routing win over AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina.

“We’re coming from an intense Derby where we spent a lot of energy. Now the important thing is to raise our heads and prepare well for Empoli.

“We always try to get to the end on all fronts. It’s only the beginning and there’s still great room for improvement.”
