Former Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku says he didn’t need much convincing to join Roma during the summer transfer window.
Speaking to the official Serie A social media channel, via FCInterNews, the Belgian gave his thoughts on his transfer to the Giallorossi on loan from Chelsea after his relationship with Inter soured.
Lukaku joined Roma during the closing days of the transfer window.
The 30-year-old had quite the summer transfer saga.
First, it had seemed as though it was only a matter of time before Lukaku would rejoin Inter. He had spent last season on loan with the Nerazzurri, having previously played for the club between 2019 and 2021.
But then Inter pulled the plug on the signing, after learning of the striker’s flirtations with Juventus.
It then seemed as though the Bianconeri were the club in pole position to sign Lukaku. But they never got a deal over the line, leaving the question of the striker’s future hanging very much in the air.
Romelu Lukaku Had No Doubts About Joining Roma
Eventually, Roma were the club who saw an opportunity in Lukaku, and went for it.
The Giallorossi brought the 30-year-old in on a one-season loan deal, with a purchase option at the end of the season.
Lukaku said that “When we were close to an agreement, a lot of people were telling me that the fans were waiting for me.”
“I was really focused on getting into my best physical condition,” the Belgian continued.
“And then when I arrived I really wanted to live the moment.”
“I got the sense of excitement, it’s a great incentive to try and give everything to this team.” Lukaku said.
He noted that “All it took was one call. The owners called me a few days before we found an agreement.”
“We talked for around half an hour about the ambition of the club, and then everything went very quickly from there,” Lukaku said.
