Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi will be relying on his most experienced players in this evening’s Champions League clash with Benfica.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipates that Marcus Thuram and Yann Sommer could be the only summer signings who start the match.
At the start of this season, only two of Inter’s twelve summer signings went straight into the starting eleven.
Stirker Marcus Thuram instantly formed the first-choice attacking partnership alongside Lautaro Martinez.
And goalkeeper Yann Sommer also slotted straight into the team.
Inzaghi had little choice but to rely on these players – the summer turnover in attack and in goal necessitated it.
But elsewhere on the pitch the coach mostly went with players who’d been at the club last season.
And according to the Corriere, that could be the case this evening as well.
Inzaghi To Go With Experience In Inter Vs Benfica Clash
Inzaghi knows how important getting three points with a convincing performance is this evening. And the coach has already been at the helm for a recent victory over this same opposition.
Inter beat Benfica in the quarterfinals of last season’s competition.
Therefore, there are still plenty of players in this squad who know how to get the job done against the Portuguese champions.
As such, the Corriere reports, Inzaghi could largely turn to the same group of players to start this evening.
Sommer and Thuram are assured of their places. The pair will be hoping to get right up to speed against Benfica.
But elsewhere in the team, there may not be any new faces from the last time Inter faced the Lisbon giants.
Most significantly, this could mean that Matteo Darmian starts ahead of Benjamin Pavard.
The pair are both playing for a place on the right side of defense.
