Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi is very happy with both his team and with the San Siro crowd after this evening’s Champions League win over Benfica.

The coach spoke to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInter1908, following the 1-0 group stage win.

Inter took control in their Champions League group with this evening’s win over Benfica.

After a poor performance from which the Nerazzurri managed to snatch a draw against Real Sociedad in their opener, the team were far more convincing against the Portuguese champions.

Inter’s margin of victory was only a narrow 1-0 scoreline.

But in truth, that scoreline flatters the visiting side.

Particularly in the second half, Inter created quite a few good chances to score. The Nerazzurri, and particularly Lautaro Martinez, forced Benfica keeper Anatoliy Trubin to make several good saves.

And it was a Nerazzurri performance that looked controlled and fluid in all areas of the pitch.

Inter Milan Coach Simone Inzaghi Happy With Win Vs Benfica At San Siro

After the match, Inzaghi remarked that “I congratulated the guys afterwards.”

“Let’s not forget that we returned at 3:30 in the morning from Salerno, and Benfica had played the day before us.”

“The guys were amazing, I saw them play a second half with incredible intensity,” the Inter coach continued.

“We did well, even if we hit the post, the crossbar, and also had some incredible saves from Trubin,” he continued.

“We kept our heads despite all of that, we could’ve been luckier, I congratulated the guys,” the coach went on.

Of the San Siro during the match, Inzaghi said “It was a wonderful crowd. The Curva were right their behind us. They helped push us on and I want to thank them.”

Asked if he said anything in particular at halftime to spur the team’s second half performance, Inzaghi replied “I told the guys that we had to be in the game and focused, Benfica reached the quarter-finals last year and won their league.”

“We could have done better, we showed some carelessness on a throw-in,” the coach noted.

“But tonight we remained focused, we have to keep doing that.”
