Former Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli feels that both Inter Milan and AC Milan have stronger squads than the Bianconeri this season.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, Barzgagli weighed in on three of the teams widely tipped to go all the way in the Serie A title race.
Today has so far been an intriguing day at the top of the Serie A table.
Inter and Juventus have already played. The Nerazzurri’s 2-2 draw against Bologna at the San Siro allowed the Bianconeri to get within two points of them, something that certainly feels like touching distance in the context of the emerging title race.
And Juventus took that opportunity. The Bianconeri produced a controlled 2-0 win over city rivals Torino.
Now it is over to Milan.
The Rossoneri come up against Genoa, playing away in Liguria. They could in fact go into the international break two points ahead of their city rivals Inter in spite of having lost in a 5-1 humiliation in the most recent derby.
That is only, of course, if the Rossoneri can actually win their match this evening, however.
Barzagli: Inter & AC Milan Have Stronger Squads Than Juventus
What looks to be clear is that Inter, Milan, and Juventus are the main frontrunners for the Serie A title this season.
That is not to discount last season’s champions Napoli. The Partneopei are not too far behind in fourth.
And then Atalanta are also doing what they can to keep in touch with the Champions League.
But the Nerazzurri, the Rossoneri, and the Bianconeri look to be the three teams who have shown early on that they have what it takes.
In the view of former Juventus defender Barzagli, however, his old team may be a step down. At least in terms of the quality of their squad.
Barzagli believes that if anything Juventus have done well just to keep in touch at the top.
“Juve aren’t the favourites,” he said of the title race. “But still they have a number of international-quality players. So they have to have a good season.”
“Having said that, at least in terms of the quality of their squads, the Milan teams and Napoli have more.”
“The Nerazzurri are more aware of their own quality after the final in Istanbul,” the former defender continued.
“And Milan have positively surprised me,” he added.
