Edin Dzeko is feeling some regret at leaving Inter Milan after the surprise of Romelu Lukaku also leaving during the summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who reveal some of the backstory of the Bosnian’s departure from the Nerazzurri during the summer transfer window.

Dzeko left Inter to join Fenerbahce on a free transfer ahead of this season.

The 37-year-old saw out the two-year contract that he had signed to join the Nerazzurri from Roma in the summer of 2021.

And without agreeing an extension, Dzeko was free to leave.

It had looked for some time as though Inter would keep the Bosnian international.

Last season, Dzeko continued to prove his worth for Inter. The former Manchester City striker had started in the Champions League final against his old club.

And Dzeko had also started in every knockout match in the Champions League up to that point, in fact.

Meanwhile, the Bosnian was a regular starter throughout the season.

Edin Dzeko Regretting Inter Departure After Lukaku U-Turn

There was always a certain sense that the competition between Dzeko and Lukaku for a starting place caused some difficulties.

And the Bosnian recently revealed that this was part of the reason why he did not stay at Inter.

Dzeko admitted that he gladly would have stayed. But there was no new deal agreed with Inter, partly because the club wanted to increase Lukaku’s confidence and make clear that they were placing their faith and trust completely in the Belgian.

Accordingly, the turn of events that saw Lukaku not join Inter but join Roma instead came as an even bigger surprise.

And it came as a surprise to Dzeko as well.

According to Tuttosport, the 37-year-old is now feeling some regret at leaving Inter.

Had it been clear all along that Lukaku would not be sticking around, Dzeko likely would have stayed another season.
