Inter Milan aren’t rushing into contract extension talks with Matteo Darmian due to a clause in the 33-year-old’s contract.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

At the moment, Darmian’s contract with Inter runs until the end of next June.

The former Manchester United and Torino defender signed an extension with the Nerazzurri last summer, extending his stay by one season rather than leaving on a free transfer.

Darmian is currently in his fourth season at Inter, having joined from Parma in the summer of 2020.

The Italian international has continued to regularly start matches at the start of the current season.

Darmian has played both at right-wingback and on the right of the back three.

It was in the latter position that the 33-year-old became a fixture last season. Having joined as a wingback – capable of playing on either the right or left – Darmian adapted to the right centre-back role whilst Milan Skriniar was injured.

Why Inter Not In Any Hurry To Begin Contract Extension Talks With Matteo Darmian

According to the Gazzetta, there is a clause in Darmian’s contract which entails an automatic extension if and when he makes a certain number of appearances this summer.

Therefore, the newspaper anticipates, there is a sense that the Italian international’s deal will probably extend.

Darmian remains a fixture in the Inter team, even after the arrival of Benjamin Pavard.

So far this season, the versatile former United defender has played both at right-wingback and on the right of the back three.

As such, Inter are not in much of a hurry to begin talks with Darmian and his agent.

The expectation is that if he remains a regular appearance-maker throughout the season, the extension will happen.

The situation is markedly different to that of midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian’s deal runs out at the end of next June like that of Darmian. But there is no similar clause. Inter know they have to get moving if they wish to secure Mkhitaryan’s services into the future.
