Former Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku could already leave Roma at the end of the current season.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who suggest that there is little guarantee of the Belgian sticking around in the Italian capital after his loan from Chelsea runs out.
It would be fair to say that Lukaku has hit the ground running at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 30-year-old made the move to Roma in the last couple days of the summer transfer window.
This followed a long and acrimonious transfer saga that saw Lukaku’s relationship with Inter sour completely. Then, the striker was linked with Juventus as well as AC Milan and Al-Hilal among others.
But it was the Giallorossi who finally sealed the deal for Lukaku after all the drama and speculation.
And Roma’s decision has seemingly paid off, at least in the early going.
Lukaku has scored seven goals in his first eight matches for the capital club.
After a disastrous start to the season for Roma, the Belgian has brought things back on track.
Romelu Lukaku Could End Roma Stay After Just One Season
All eyes are now on Lukaku’s return to the San Siro to face Inter with his new club.
Roma face the Nerazzurri at the end of the current month.
Anticipation is high for what could be an almost unprecedentedly negative reception for the Belgian from the Inter faithful, considering how things went in the summer.
But in the longer term, there is also the question of what will happen with Lukaku at Roma at the end of the season.
The Giallorossi retain the option to sign the 30-year-old on a permanent basis from Chelsea.
However, it’s not certain that they will exercise it – although obviously continuation of the striker’s current form would encourage them to do so.
And then there is the question of Lukaku’s intentions.
There is always a possibility that the Belgian could look to more attractive offers. The interest in Lukaku’s signature is likely to grow if he keeps scoring goals for Roma.
And the future of Jose Mourinho as Giallorossi coach could be an additional factor to consider.
The Portuguese was an important factor in Lukaku’s arrival. And if he were to be out the door in the summer, then the Belgian could well follow him.
