Retired Italian striker Christian Vieri praises Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella even though he isn’t enjoying his finest moment.

The 26-year-old has been a pillar at the club since making the move from Cagliari in the summer of 2019.

However, many feel that the Italy international has yet to showcase his best displays since the start of the season.

The 26-year-old has made 12 appearances across all competitions this season but only contributed with a single assist.

On Tuesday, Simone Inzaghi left Barella on the bench for the Champions League encounter against Red Bull Salzburg. The manager opted to start with Davide Frattesi alongside Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Therefore, Vieri acknowledges that the Italian midfielder is going through a tough period.

However, the legendary striker insists that Barella remains a great player and expects him to bounce back.

“Barella isn’t at his best. But that’s okay, I don’t see this as a big problem,” argued Vieri during the latest episode of Bobo TV via FcInterNews.

“Inzaghi now has a very strong bench. So this season, if Barella is tired, he gets to rest and Frattesi plays in his stead.

“I always considered Barella a great midfielder. In my opinion, he remains a point of reference for the manager.”

Barella has thus far won one Scudetto title, a couple of Coppa Italia trophies and as many Italian Super Cups during his time at Appiano Gentile. He also clinched the Euro 2020 trophy with the Italian national team.

The midfielder’s contract with the Nerazzurri runs until the summer of 2026.
