Italian media are praising goalkeeper Yann Sommer for the very solid start that he’s gotten off to at Inter Milan this season.
Italian news outlet Gazetta.it highlight the fact that the Swiss international has only conceded seven goals so far in a Nerazzurri shirt this campaign.
Inter decided to go the route of experience when replacing Andre Onana during the summer.
The Cameroonian’s departure to Manchester United left the Nerazzurri with a big vacancy to fill.
And the fact that Tottenham Hotspur sealed a deal to sign Inter’s main target Guglielmo Vicario left the Nerazzurri scrambling for other options.
There were some young keepers who Inter considered.
Among them were Anatoliy Trubin and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
But in the end, the Nerazzurri decided to make a move for a player who is a very proven commodity in order to steady the ship.
Inter signed 34-year-old Swiss veteran Sommer from Bayern Munich in the last month of the transfer window.
Sommer arrived with a big reputation. With Basel, Borrusia Monchengladbach, Bayern, and the Swiss national team he had established himself as one of Europe’s most formidable shot-stoppers.
But given Sommer’s age, it was always imperative that the Swiss deliver performances right away.
Inter were not signing the 34-year-old as an investment for the future. His age means that he will not have more than a few years of top performances, and has little resale value.
But so far, Inter’s strategy has been paying off.
Yann Sommer Praised For Solid Start To Life At Inter
The main attribute that Sommer brings to the team, ultimately, is his shot-stopping.
The Swiss has won plaudits for his reflexes and alertness throughout his career.
This has allowed Sommer to bail Gladbach and Switzerland out on countless occasions when they have allowed good chances for their opponents.
And that has been exactly the quality that Sommer has brought to Inter.
It is not exactly as though the 34-year-old is facing a barrage of shots.
After all, the Nerazzurri have a strong defense as a team. This means that they don’t allow that many opportunities.
But when opposition shots do come in, Sommer has always been ready.
The Swiss showed that with his excellent save on Bryan Cristante in Sunday’s Serie A win over Roma.
Sommer has shown that even when he is largely a passenger in a match, he can turn it on when his team need him most.
There has been one bad moment. Sommer’s error against Sassuolo came at the worst time for Inter as the Neroverdi kicked off a 2-1 comeback win.
But otherwise, Sommer has been just what Inter have needed him to be.
The 34-year-old has kept eight clean sheets in his first thirteen matches for the club. That is more than the seven goals that he has let in.
