Inter Milan could be left having to figure out what to do with forward Joaquin Correa next summer after his Marseille loan ends.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight the Argentine’s situation.

Inter may have expected that they’d found a new permanent club for Correa when they sent the former Lazio man to Marseille during the summer.

Technically, the 29-year-old’s transfer was only a loan. But it also contained a purchase option, which becomes an obligation if Marseille qualify for the Champions League.

Naturally, therefore, that is an outcome that Inter have been hoping for.

Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri signed Alexis Sanchez on a free transfer.

The Chilean returned to Inter twelve months after he had left. He went the other way, returning from Marseille.

It seemed, at the time, like a fairly tidy solution to a player who had become something of a headache for Inter in the form of Correa.

Inter Could Be Stuck With Joaquin Correa After Marseille Loan Ends

It’s no great secret why Inter wanted to find a new club for Correa during the summer.

The Argentine arrived at the Nerazzurri from Lazio in the summer of 2021. He cost a fee of around €30 million.

But Correa was never able to have the impact that Inter had hoped for from him.

Injuries played a major role in disrupting the Argentine’s momentum.

And for that reason Inter certainly don’t want to have Correa back next summer.

The forward would still be on wages of €4 million net per season. And he would be in the Nerazzurri’s books for around €8.5 million.

But at the moment, Marseille are eleven points off of Champions League qualification in Ligue 1.

And it doesn’t look too likely that they’ll climb the table too quickly. Particularly not with the chaos off the pitch that saw coach Marcelino leave, with Gennaro Gattuso replacing him.

Therefore, there is a good chance that the obligation for Marseille to sign Correa permanently at the end of the season will not kick in.

And considering that the Inter-owned forward has yet to score or assist a goal this season for Marseille, it is not as thought the French club will be rushing to exercise their option.
