Inter Milan star Stefan de Vrij enjoyed his return to the starting formation as the Netherlands booked their spot in Euro 2024.

The Dutch hosted the Republic of Ireland in Amsterdam on Saturday night in their penultimate qualifier.

The Oranje emerged victorious thanks to a solitary goal from Wout Weghorst. Inter defender de Vrij provided him with the assist.

The 31-year-old made his return to Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up partially due to Matthijs de Ligt’s injury.

The former Lazio man expressed his delight with his participation, revealing how he remained patient waiting for his opportunity.

“It was nice to be back in the starting lineup. It has been a while,” said de Vrij in his post-match comments via FcInter1908.

“You get older, you gain more experience and you learn more things. Then you also learn to deal with setbacks and turn them into something positive.

“I always come to the national team with a big smile on my face, I always do my best and I enjoy it.

“I also believe I fit in very well within the group. I have to be patient, wait for my opportunity and make sure I’m ready.”

The Nerazzurri stalwart also spoke about the Netherland’s great potential.

“There is a lot of potential. We hope that everyone will be fit in the summer. Then we’ll have an excellent lineup.

“I will do everything I can to be in the Euro 2024 squad and convince the coach.

“If this opportunity comes again, I will have to make sure I am ready to seize it.”
