Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries has received some criticism for a sloppy performance against Juventus yesterday.

As L’Interista highlight, the player ratings for the match across Italian media gave the 27-year-old very middling scores.

Dumfries took up his customary position in the Inter starting eleven for yesterday evening’s match.

The Dutchman didn’t really have much of an impact though.

There were not really opportunities for Dumfries to run forward into space. That is the former PSV wingback’s strong suit.

Instead, Juventus made sure that space was at an absolute premium.

The Bianconeri did so with an organized and disciplined compact defensive block.

Therefore, more finesse was needed to break down Juventus.

And as Dumfries drifted further in field to try and link up with teammates, he was unable to really provide that.

There was one opportunity around the Juventus penalty area.

Dumfries attempted to link up with Inter captain Lautaro Martinez.

However, the 27-year-old’s touch let him down on that occasion.

And that was not the only time that Dumfries’s first touch proved to be an issue.

The Dutchman was also the player who gave the ball away for Juventus’s opener.

Dumfries was attempting to chest down a long pass from Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. However, his attempt was not precise enough, giving Bianconeri striker Dusan Vlahovic the chance to nip in and fight for the second ball.

It was the Serb who came out on top in that duel.

Vlahovic rushed forward and linked up with Federico Chiesa on the counterattack.

It was this combination that created the Juventus opener.

All in all then, it was a bit of a night to forget for Dumfries.

The match did not suit the Dutchman’s strengths, and Juan Cuadrado had more luck as he replaced Dumfries against his old team during the second half.
