Inter Milan could make a move for Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez as early as the January transfer window.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper also anticipate that the Nerazzurri won’t likely want a swap deal involving Gaetano Oristanio.

27-year-old Uruguayan international midfielder Nandez has come back onto Inter’s radar.

The player’s agent confirmed that the Nerazzurri are in talks about a possible move.

A key facet to Inter’s interest in Nandez would seem to be his versatility.

The Uruguayan plays mainly as a central midfielder for Cagliari and his national team.

But Nandez has also shown himself to be capable of playing out wide. He can play as either a wide midfielder or as a wingback.

In fact, it is Nandez’s capacity in the latter role that had initially led Inter to target him.

The Uruguayan had played at right-wingback under then-Rossblu coach Leonardo Semplici during the 2020-21 season.

Nandez had impressed so much in that role that Inter targeted him as a replacement for Achraf Hakimi.

In the end, the Nerazzurri signed Denzel Dumfries as a replacement for Hakimi in the position.

But they have still kept Nandez’s versatility in mind.

Inter Could Move For Nahitan Nandez As Early As January

And it is Nandez’s capacity to play at wingback that could cause Inter to try and sign the 27-year-old as early as during the January transfer window.

One of the possible objectives for January could be to reinforce on the right flank.

That would be because of some fitness concerns regarding the options already in the squad.

Dumfries is the first-choice option. But the 27-year-old has had some issues with muscle fatigue in recent weeks.

Meanwhile Inter signed ex-Juventus, Chelsea, and Fiorentina veteran Juan Cuadrado during the summer.

The Colombian came in to be the main backup for Dunmfries, and to provide some competition and a different stylistic profile on the right.

But so far this season, tendon problems have greatly limited Cuadrado’s impact. The 35-year-old has yet to start for Inter.

Matteo Darmian can still play on the right wing. But the ex-Manchester United man is increasingly important cover in defense – particularly with Benjamin Pavard out.

Therefore, Inter could decide to move for a wingback as early as January. This would strengthen the team for the run-in of the season.

And Nandez would be among the players who the Nerazzurri could target.

But Tuttosport report that an exchange deal involving young attacking midfielder Oristanio would not be likely for Nandez.

The 21-year-old is currently on loan at Cagliari.

The Sardinians have a purchase option worth €4 million. And then Inter have a buyback option worth €5.5 million.

Reports have suggested that Oristanio’s name could come up in negotiations for Nandez.

But according to Tuttosport, Inter are inclined to keep hold of the young attacking midfielder’s future.
