A number of players on the fringes of the Inter Milan squad will get their opportunity in the Champions League against Benfica this evening.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi certainly appears to have a clear plan for this evening.

The coach wants to avoid risking many of his key starters ahead of next Sunday’s Serie A match away to Napoli.

That trip to Campania to face the reigning Italian champions will be massively important.

Having just secured a draw against title rivals Juventus a couple days ago, Inter will face another big test of their Scudetto credentials.

Therefore, it is natural that Inzaghi will want to have his first-choice team at its absolute best for that match.

This evening, on the other hand, won’t likely be quite as important.

Inter have already secured their spot in the Champions League round of sixteen.

There is still top spot in the group to fight for. That would certainly be a potential advantage if Inter want to repeat their deep run in Europe’s top club competition from last season.

And moreover, it is not as though Inzaghi won’t want his team to get another win.

Inter have been in good form for weeks now. The coach will know the importance of retaining momentum.

But the reality is simple. Inter and Inzaghi will be prioritizing Sunday’s match against Napoli.

Rarely-Used Inter Players To Get Opportunities Vs Benfica

For key Inter starters like Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez, Inzaghi’s plan will represent a welcome rest.

The fixture list does not exactly allow for these sorts of players to get a night off very often.

Therefore, there is naturally some wear and tear from playing a lot of high-intensity matches.

But for some other players, Inzaghi’s rotation could represent something different.

There are a few players in Inter’s squad who almost never get out on the pitch.

Former Sampdoria and Juventus goalkeeper Emil Audero, for example, has yet to play a single minute for Inter since joining the Nerazzurri during the summer transfer window.

Therefore, this evening will represent a great chance for the 26-year-old to show that he has a real contribution to make at Inter.

And former Ajax, Everton, and Werder Bremen midfielder Davy Klaassen will also have his chance.

The 30-year-old arrived to bolster the midfield depth at Inter this summer. He came on a free transfer on the final day of the transfer window.

But so far, Klaassen’s opportunities have proven minimal.

But the Dutchman does come with a significant reputation and experience within both the club and international game.

Therefore, Klaassen will be all too keen to prove his quality this evening.

The same is true of Germany Under-21 defender Yann Bisseck.

Unlike Klaassen, Bisseck has little significant experience. The 22-year-old is still at the start of his career.

But Bisseck has shown promise. That is what convinced Inter to sign him from Danish club Aarhus during the summer.

And the young German will naturally be hungry to prove that he belongs at a club of Inter’s stature with a good performance this evening against Portuguese champions Benfica.
