Carlos Augusto is likely to start in defense for Inter Milan in Saturday evening’s Serie A match against Udinese.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

There is no disguising the fact that Inter are now in the midst of a full-blown injury crisis.

Alessandro Bastoni, Benjamin Pavard, Stefan de Vrij, and Denzel Dumfries are all currently on the sidelines.

Bastoni should be back for Saturday’s match. Meanwhile, the other three will miss at least the next couple matches.

In Sunday evening’s Serie A win away to Napoli, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi improvised a solution in the form of playing Brazilian international Augusto in the back three.

And Augusto acquitted himself well in the position. Despite centre-back not being the former Monza man’s most comfortable role, he helped Inter hold out for a clean sheet.

Carlos Augusto To Start For Inter Vs Udinese

Augusto was forced to play on the left of the defense because Bastoni was out, and then Francesco Acerbi had to move to the centre of the back three after de Vrij picked up his injury.

Bastoni being back will mean that the 24-year-old will not be forced to play there.

The Italian international is, after all, the clear first-choice on the left of the back three.

But that would only be the case if Bastoni is fit enough to start.

And according to the Corriere, it is doubtful that that will be the case on Saturday.

Bastoni is only just coming back from a calf problem. He is returning to full training today.

So Inzaghi is not likely to rush the Italian back into the starting eleven.

Rather, Bastoni should instead start on the bench against Udinese.

This will mean that Inzaghi has to come up with an alternative solution on the left of the defense.

There is always the possibility of Yann Bisseck there.

But according to the Corriere, Augusto will reprise his role from the Napoli match. And this time he will do so from the first whistle.
