Inter Milan would only consider signing Manchester United’s Anthony Martial as a backup option to Porto’s Mehdi Taremi.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInter1908.

28-year-old former Monaco striker Martial is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the current season.

The Red Devils have made the decision that they will not trigger an option to automatically extend the Frenchman’s contract.

Therefore, Martial will be free to join a new club at the end of next June.

The Frenchman joined United in the summer of 2015. He has made over three hundred appearances and scored ninety goals for the Red Devils across all competitions.

But the broad sense is that Martial has never quite lived up to his potential at Old Trafford.

Martial will likely have no shortage of suitors during the summer.

Even though the 28-year-old has never fully convinced in a United shirt, his quality is undeniable.

One team who have a longstanding interest in Martial is Inter.

Inter Only Consider Anthony Martial As A Taremi Backup Target

The Nerazzurri’s interest in Martial extends all the way back to his time as a Monaco player.

And the fact that the French international would be available without a transfer fee when his contract with United runs out does naturally cause Inter to sit up and take notice.

Free transfer opportunities are a pillar of the Nerazzurri’s transfer strategy under Beppe Marotta.

But that doesn’t mean that Martial is anything like a priority target for Inter.

On the contrary, Inter are mostly focusing on a different striker who will be available for free next summer.

Porto and Iran striker Taremi sees his contract with his current club expire at the end of next June.

And Inter see the 31-year-old as an ideal solution in attack.

But should the Nerazzurri miss out on their main target Taremi, they also have Martial in mind.
