Inter Milan want to avoid a “Milan Skriniar situation” with Denzel Dumfries in the next eighteen months at all costs.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Dumfries is currently under contact with Inter until the end of June 2025.
The Dutchman joined the Nerazzurri from PSV during the summer of 2021. He signed a four-year deal at the time, which he is still under contract with.
Dumfries is therefore a player who Inter are keen to agree a new contract with.
The 27-year-old is not the only one. Inter have also been working towards extensions for the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Federico Dimarco, Lautario Martinez, and Nicolo Barella.
But unlike with those players, the talks between Inter and Dumfries are still a long way away from leading to an agreement on a new deal.
There is still a big gap between what Inter are offering, and what Dumfries and his representatives are demanding.
Inter Want To Avoid Milan Skriniar Situation With Denzel Dumfries At All Costs
Inter’s aim is to make sure that Dumfries puts pen to paper on a new deal before the summer transfer window.
And if the ex-PSV wingback does not, Inter will definitely try to sell him.
The reason is not hard to understand. The Nerazzurri do not want to risk losing Dumfries on a free transfer in the following summer.
Inter have had this happen with one high-profile player in the recent past.
Defender Milan Skriniar left the Nerazzurri at the end of his contract in June of this past summer.
The Slovakian joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
Therefore, Inter know exactly what could happen if they don’t address Dumfries’s situation sooner rather than later.
Having had it happen once with Skriniar in the past twelve months, Inter will do everything they can to avoid it happening a second time with Dumfries.
