Former midfielder Borja Valero believes that for all the great work of CEO Beppe Marotta, Inter Milan need stability behind the scenes to win.

The Spaniard spoke about the Nerazzurri’s situation on Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews.

At the moment, few individuals are as important at Inter as Marotta.

The veteran executive joined the Nerazzurri in 2018. He came in after having departed from Juventus, whose transfer strategy he had masterminded for nearly a decade.

Marotta has gone with a similar approach at Inter as he had at the Bianconeri.

The CEO has focused on free transfers and low-cost opportunities, although he has occasionally opened up the chequebook.

This has been a big plus for Inter given the significant financial restrictions that the club has faced since the start of the pandemic.

Marotta has made free transfer signings of players like Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Andre Onana, and Marcus Thuram.

This has allowed the Nerazzurri’s squad to remain competitive. Even whilst they have had to meet ambitious financial targets rather than spending big.

Valero: Marotta Brilliant, But Inter Need Stability Behind The Scenes To Win

In the view of former midfielder Valero, however, there is only so far that Marotta’s approach can go.

Even for as well as the CEO has proven able to work within a tight budget, at a certain point the club will have to back him financially and give him a firm basis on which to conduct business.

And in the view of Valero, that can only come with stability behind the scenes.

As far as how Inter can have a great winning cycle, Valero said that “The conditions have to be there to do that.”

“if you sell a lot of players every season it becomes difficult.”

“But if the financial conditions became normal then it would be possible,” the Spaniard argued.

“Because the base is Inter, and Marotta is very good at finding opportunities in the transfer market.”
