Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez feels that the important thing was winning against Hellas Verona, even if the performance wasn’t perfect.

The Nerazzurri captain spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, after this afternoon’s 2-1 Serie A victory against relegation-battlers the Gialloblu.

In the end, Inter emerge from this evening’s match with three points.

That means that no matter what the result of tomorrow’s match between Juventus and Salerntiana is, the Nerazzurri will finish the weekend top of the Serie A table.

It was not the most convincing of performances to get those three points, though.

Inter went ahead early on. It was captain Martinez who provided a clinical finish to a flowing team move to cut the Verona defense apart.

But after that, Inter were not at their best as they attempted to carve out the chances for a second goal.

Then, Verona scored an equalizer in the second half.

It was a sucker punch for Inter. But in truth there had been warning signs.

Midfielder Davide Frattesi scored in second half stoppage time. Then there was even more late drama as Verona went down to ten men, received a penalty, and went on to miss that penalty.

But when the dust settles. it is three precious points for Inter.

Lautaro Martinez: Important For Inter To Win Vs Verona

Of his return to the team, Martinez said that “I missed being out on the pitch a lot. I’m happy to be back playing with my teammates.”

“Today it was important to win,” the Argentine continued.

“We were at home against a team that has objectives of its own,” he said.

“They recently switched coaches, and came here to do their job.”

Martinez noted that “We did what we had prepared.”

“Perhaps not always very well, but we take the three points knowing full well that Juventus are right behind us and we have to keep winning matches.”

“We certainly have to get better at killing off matches,” the 26-year-old continued.

“But the important thing is not leaving three points out there on the pitch.”

As far as goals for 2024 for Inter, Martinez said “Continuing to grow, as individuals and as a group.”

“Now we have another important Serie A match. And then the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia.”
