Legendary former Nerazzurri captain Beppe Bergomi feels there’s absolutely no merit to the idea of a refereeing conspiracy favouring Inter Milan in Serie A.

The former Italian international defender dismissed the notion on Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

This weekend, Inter beat Hellas Verona courtesy of a stoppage time goal from Davide Frattesi.

The 24-year-old’s late strike was not without controversy, however.

Namely, the consensus is that the officials should have disallowed the effort. Not because of anything wrong with the goal itself – but because of an incident in the buildup.

Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni had given a plainly visible raised-arm shove to Verona midfielder Ondrej Duda moments before Frattesi stuck the ball into the net.

Referee Michael Fabbri did not deem the incident to be worthy of a foul in real time.

And, inexplicably, the VAR official Luigi Nasca also did not advise Fabbri to go and look at it on his monitor. The goal stood.

Bergomi: No Conspiracy Favouring Inter In Serie A

Naturally, this controversial decision has led to all sorts of conspiracy theories.,

These are certainly part and parcel with football, for better or for worse. And that has only become more the case during the social media era.

But for his part, former Inter captain Bergomi feels that there is no case for such “conspiracies” existing in favour of the Nerazzurrii. It was just a bad decision without any such intent.

“There’s no doubt that Bastoni committed a foul,” Bergomi said on Sky.

“But when we start talking about conspiracies… I’m not having any of that.”

The former defender posed, “How can there be a conspiracy when, on the Verona equalizer, a foul could have gone the way of Arnautovic?”

“And then, through VAR specifically, Verona got a penalty in the last minute,” Bergomi noted.

The former defender was certain – there is hardly a pattern of decisions going the way of Inter, even if the Nerazzurri did certainly benefit from one incorrect one.
